An Ode to Marble
Fall 2022

This project aims to transform a vacant courtyard into a captivating space that showcases the beauty and sustainability of recycled marble. Focusing on the inherent qualities of marble, specifically the use of leftover scraps from quarries, this design showcases the versatility and timeless appeal of this remarkable material.

The courtyard is envisioned as a progression of spaces that evolve from grandeur to intimacy, encouraging various social interactions throughout. At the entrance, large marble blocks serve as focal points, symbolizing strength and durability. As one ventures further into the space, the marble blocks gradually decrease in size, creating pockets of smaller gathering spaces, each with its own unique atmosphere and purpose.

Intimate areas are nestled between the blocks, offering serene spots for reflection and contemplation. Playful elements, such as stepping stones invite visitors to engage with the space actively. The irregular interior arrangement of the marble blocks creates a visually stimulating mosaic, celebrating the diversity of shapes and colors found in recycled marble, while the rectilinear outline is a nod to the marble when extracted.

By repurposing discarded marble scraps, this space embraces sustainability while promoting the inherent elegance and versatility of this material. The courtyard serves as a testament to the transformative power of recycling and reimagining, offering a striking and eco-conscious space for individuals to connect, gather, and appreciate the beauty of nature's legacy.
