Edge Conditions: Bridging Urban and Natural Realms
Fall 2022

This project redefines the urban waterfront experience by seamlessly merging the natural and built environments. This design revolves around a dynamic, undulating wall that traverses the site, blurring the edges between the urban fabric and the waterfront landscape. This continuous wall serves as both a physical and conceptual divide, organizing the space into distinct zones that cater to various social interactions. Along the water's edge, the wall dips gracefully, creating intimate and tranquil areas for smaller gatherings. These natural enclaves offer opportunities for relaxation and reflection, providing a serene connection to the waterfront.

Conversely, as the wall returns  towards the urban street, it opens up into expansive fields that can accommodate larger gatherings and public events. This transition zone seamlessly integrates the urban context, providing a platform for community engagement and enhancing the vibrant spirit of the city.

A strategically placed path runs through the entire site, cutting through the undulating wall and facilitating direct travel. This path encourages movement and rhythm,  while maintaining a connection to the natural and urban realms, enhancing accessibility and ensuring a cohesive experience for all visitors.

Edge Conditions challenges the conventional separation between the urban and natural, creating a harmonious interplay that fosters a sense of place, community, and environmental stewardship. By blurring these boundaries, this  design offers a transformative waterfront space that encourages engagement, contemplation, and a renewed appreciation for the relationship between nature and the cityscape.
